Pathways Updates

Toastmasters is updating all the Paths starting 10/26/21. Level 1 will be changing as far as what projects will be the requirements. I'm not sure when this will roll out formally. There is a message on the Toastmaster website that states The new Pathways Level 1 is almost here! To prepare for this update, Pathways path purchases will be unavailable for approximately 24 hours, beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern Time/UTC -4 on October 26.

The changes to Level 1 will be: The “Evaluation and Feedback” project and the “Ice Breaker,” a beloved Toastmasters tradition, will be joined by two new projects to make up Level 1: “Writing a Speech with Purpose” and “Introduction to Vocal Variety and Body Language.” These new projects will teach basic public speaking skills and should help new members feel less overwhelmed and provide building blocks to expand on as they progress through their path. “Researching and Presenting,” a project previously found in Level 1, will be repurposed as an elective in Level 3.

These changes will only affect Paths that are chosen after this is in place. It will not affect any of the Paths that have already been purchased even if they have not been started.

Icebreaker and Level 1 Project 2, Evaluation and Feedback speeches

From Merideth White, VPE (Edited by Rick Arellano)

One does not need to repeat an Icebreaker. The Icebreaker is just a speech to get "your feet wet" as far as experiencing preparing and giving a speech. One can continue to introduce oneself in many ways in future speeches.

After the  Icebreaker speech one needs to do the first speech in Level 1 Project 2, Evaluation and Feedback.

Project 2 in Level 1 of your Pathways program (Presentation Mastery) consists of doing two speeches and an evaluation. You do the first speech of this project which is a 5-7 minute speech. Using the feedback that you receive on this evaluation, you do your second speech. Your second speech can be a repeat of the first speech or a different speech. The purpose is that you use the feedback you received to improve your skills in speaking. The third portion of this project is to evaluate a speech. An experienced member will do an evaluation of your evaluation. This is to provide feedback on your evaluation, what you excelled at, what to work on and how to challenge yourself.

So to clarify Level 1 Project 2, which consists of three speeches. FYI- Evaluations are considered speeches in the Pathways Program.

1. Evaluation and Feedback - First Speech

2. Evaluation and Feedback - Second Speech

    a. Use the feedback from the evaluation of your first speech in your second speech. For example, if it was suggested that you work on adding some vocal variety to your first speech, with your second speech try to include that.

    b. Your second speech can be a repeat of your first speech or a completely different topic. The focus is that you work on improving your speaking skills using the feedback from the evaluation.

3. Evaluating your Evaluation

    a. Toastmasters has realized that constructive evaluations are a good tool for members to use to improve their speaking skills.

    b. It is also a skill that we all can use feedback to improve our evaluating skills. This is the purpose of this part of the project.

The three evaluation forms for this Level 1 project can be found below:

Pathways Navigation, Catalog and more

From Merideth White, VP Education

1. "Secrets to Navigating Pathways". It will tell you how to make an account on Toastmasters.org to be able to get to Pathways.

2. "Pathways catalog". This will provide information about all eleven Paths in the program. There is a description of each Path. There are links that will show you what the projects are for each Path. These also link to information about the projects.

3. A presentation that will guide you on how to get to your Path and how to navigate in the Pathways. It's pretty lengthy but there is some good information.

FYI - some major things to be aware of!

1. Be sure to turn OFF your pop up blocker in your web browser.

2. In order to complete a project, you have to do the BEFORE and AFTER assessments. You will not be able to complete the project unless you complete those requirements. This is for ALL the projects that you do.

3. When you are navigating through the project tutorial, maximize the window to see all the information.
